EMG Characteristics of Stand Up Paddle Boarding Yoga

Purpose: Stand up paddle (SUP) is a popular water sport in Taiwan for recent years. When standing on SUP, it is necessary to maintain balance and core stability due to water instability, and need to more focus to maintain balance on the water. Many foreign coaches have combined the yoga with SUP, called SUP YOGA, which depend on SUP board to perform yoga pose. However, there is a bit less research on muscle activation specifically for SUP yoga or muscle activation for performing complete yoga movements on unstable planes. Therefore, this study performed SUP yoga on the water that provide the instability, and compared the muscle activation of performing SUP yoga with on the land. Method: 26 people with SUP Yoga experience were recruited into this study. The equipment included Stand Up Paddle and Delsys Trigno (Trigno TM Wireless system, Delsys Inc., USA). The dominant side muscles: Rectus abdominis (RA), External oblique (EO), Rectus femoris (RF), Erector spinae (ES), and Multifidus (MF) were measured. Each subject was instructed to perform the same Yoga pose: Mountain pose, Forward fold, Halfway lift, High plank, Low plank, Upward facing dog, Downward facing dog in land and SUP conditions. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test was used to compare the iEMG, mean value, and peak value of muscle activation, among the two conditions. Results: The results show that the RA muscle expressed significantly higher muscle activation on land than the SUP in Mountain, Forward fold, and High plank poses. For the EO muscle, there were significantly higher muscle activation on land than the SUP in the Low plank, and Upward facing dog poses. Besides, the Forward fold, Upward facing dog, Downward facing dog poses for the ES muscle and the Mountain, forward fold, Halfway lift, Upward facing dog, Downward facing dog poses for MF muscle also expressed significantly higher muscle activation on land than the SUP condition. Conclusion: In this study, we used the EMG analysis to compare the difference between common yoga poses performed on land and SUP. Although the muscle activation on land was higher than SUP, but the other muscle groups may also activate to maintain balance on the SUP. Future study are required to measure other muscles (i.e. upper- or lower limbs muscle), which would offer insights as to the muscle activation pattern of SUP yoga.
