Time Lapse is a thirty-minute short film about the search for the meaning and value of life. It tells a story of an old photographer who has captured countless moments in people’s lives as a witness to their happiness and sadness. He leads a quiet life waiting for his end to come. In his crumbling studio which is being squeezed out of business, he meets four young people who feel lost when facing their future. But after their brief encounter in the studio, they all find the meaning and directions of their lives. I did not follow the conventions of any particularly genre but in terms of the presentation and narrative of the film, I took a rather surrealist approach. In order to create a unique sense of ‘time’, the film is told and shot in a surrealist style despite the characters and stories are real. The closet reference to this short film would be Big Fish directed by Tim Burton. I would like to convey the idea of ‘passing on’ through two seemingly contradictory groups of people who in fact influence each other profoundly. One of them is an old man who is coming to the end of his life but still clings to hopes and meaning of life while the other are four young men who are supposed to have a bright future but feel hopeless and lost. The ‘past’ is told in surrealism and anachronism so it allows people who live in different times and spaces to come across one another and it subsequently guides these young men to find courage and directions for their future. In this thesis, the script is analyzed as a play in three scenes. Furthermore the analysis of cinematography, lighting, color, production design, sound and aesthetics of this film is included in the thesis, and so is a close examination of the process of the production. Creation inevitably comes from the experiences of the creator and it is true in this case. Time Lapse comes from my life experience and my view on history. The objective and the initiate inspiration of this short film are my hopes for reminding myself and the viewers of our memories and meaning of life and for this film to serve as a memento to the past.
