Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) was one of the most important painters during Baroque. His paintings, which not only had dramatic effect by using the chiaroscuro and color shading but combined the nature as the modeling with realistic expression, had a significant influence on the development of art history. According to literature, Caravaggio built and completed his growth of artistry in Lombardy before he moved to Rome in1592. To make a thorough inquiry regarding the artistic expression in sixteenth-century Lombardy; however, there were many artists, such as Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo (1480-1548), Moretto da Brescia (1498-1554) and Antonio Campi (1525-1587), had strived for the rules of simplicity and naturalism. Caravaggio’s works, which were well known for realistic expression, was influenced by those Lombardy artists who insisted on depicting the paintings with realistic and naturalistic details. However, people deepen that Caravaggio initiated the style of realistic excessively and ignore the naturalistic basis which was established by the pioneers in Lombardy. The connection between Caravaggio’s paintings and Lombardy traditions could be showed by reviewing his early works. Furthermore, Caravaggio began doing paintings with religious themes in 1600, when his works were considered to be the higher level and maturity of his style. His works combined the elements of early works and the innovative technique of expressing the use of lighting and color. This thesis takes the Caravaggio’s works during 1590 to 1600 as the main content and is about to be based on the important visual interpretation, attempting to explain the innovation in his revolution of realism.
