ABSTRACT This film looks back to the year 2003 when SARS invaded Taiwan. As a result, Taipei Ho Ping Hospital sealed off its entire building by locking in both medical personnel, outpatients and their families who were screaming for help. The media photos and videos impacted tremendously on Taiwan’s society. As an experienced media professional, I have witnessed the negative impact which was made as a result of a wrong decision to isolate the aforementioned crowds in the hospital, thus violating their human rights. Ten years have now gone by. The people and media have gradually forgotten about the fear generated by this disease. I produced this film B8 about the SARS incident in Ho Ping Hospital, which had not been filmed before. My intention is to portray the incident from the angles which have heretofore never been discussed but which should’ve been questioned. B8 tries to portray aspects of human nature. This narrative film shows how humans look for self-protection when caught under unsetting and fearful circumstances, how humans speak against their conscience when facing conflicts of interests, and how humans struggle with self-reproach to sacrifice the innocent minority to save the majority of people in a society. The script of B8 was based on field-trip investigations, as well as on mass of records acquired by the media, and in-depth interviews with the victims. B8 is 90-minute TV Movie. It uses advanced visual effects technology to show the spread of the virus. This film attempts to use a light approach to explore different aspects of human nature. This work also would like to pay tribute to those medical workers who fought in the front line during the SARS incident. This film was based on true stories. The wrong decision resulted in the spread of the virus as well as the deaths of our front line medical workers. While producing the film, the producer reflected on the social responsibility of the mass media to make available a frank discussion of these problems to society. The film also included, from a producer’s perspective, a summary of the difficulties encountered in the making of this film, both from the pre-production discussions to its completion.
