A Study of Traditional “Fu”(good fortune)

"Fu" (good fortune)is a collective term, which symbolizes good fortune in the Chinese culture. "Wu-Fu" or five categories of good fortune includes “Fu, Lu, Shou, Xi and Cai”, which means "good fortune, prosperity, longevity, joy and wealth". Wu-Fu is desired and diligently seeked after in all aspects of the daily life, including clothing, food, dwelling and everyday transportation.“Praying for Fu” has long been our heart's desire, and its essence and spirit are widely manifested in the Taiwanese folk literature, crafts and architecture. Ancient architecture and art represent part of the Chinese culture. The intrinsic meanings and qualities of the Chinese philosophy are embedded in the decorative arts and crafts. The core of my study is to establish a connection between the intangible ideology of "Praying for Fu" with its manifestation on everyday objects in the form of symbols/images. The methodology of my study includes researching the ancient Chinese literature, conducting field studies and interviewing the local residents, visiting and analyzing the traditional architecture from all over Taiwan and JinMen island. My thesis also discuss the origin of propitious symbols and the principle of craft making -- all cross-referenced with folk culture studies, folk arts/crafts and iconography. Furthermore, I included a discussion on how the distinctiveness of iconography can be influenced by its geographical separation. The persistent desire for beauty and "Fu" is also reflected on the traditional embroidery art, wood-carved printing and etcetera. The concept of Fu is so deeply rooted in people's heart and has remained unchanged despite the advancement in time and changes in the society. The marriage of the ancient icons/symbols and the modern creative industry produces merchandise that influences consumer's spending habits and thus the economic structure. "Tradition with practicality" is what I would like to call it and I sincerely hope that the essence of "praying for Fu and peace" will be mainstream in Taiwan's modern society.
