In the closing stage of the Pacific War, depleted crews and fuels forced the Japanese army to continue the war by Special Attack Units (suicide attacks) so many young soldiers served their country with flesh and blood. Given to such a historical background, Japanese Special Attack Units Shinyo were developed. This study centers on the development of Special Attack Units Shinyo in Taiwan and extends the discussion on historical literature in Japan and other Asian regions. The research scope could be divided into two perspectives: time and space. In chronological order, the development of Special Attack Units Shinyo could be categorized into four periods: inception, growth, maturity and discontinuance. In research regions, Taiwan and the Penghu archipelago are the focus, related contents of which are supplemented by materials from Japan, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Okinawa. On the other hand, referencing pictures and written records collected by institutes like Japan Center for Asian Historical Records, this study uses analysis and comparison to discuss the organization, strategic training, base facilities and deployment, and building craftsmanship of Special Attack Units Shinyo to achieve a unique position of Special Attack Units Shinyo in the histories of the Pacific War and military engineering. Lastly, this study verifies accuracy for related historical materials by field investigation on and measurement of the base ruins of Special Attack Units Shinyo in Taiwan and the Penghu archipelago. The current state and changes of the military ruins are meanwhile canvassed. Narrative interviews of participants in the war also supplement true experiences that were not recorded in literature. Could the seemingly splendid Special Attack Units and their sequent effects play a crucial role in the entire war? How is the relation of “war and the environment” and “war and a world of ordinary mortals” deduced? With the perspectives on the development of Special Attack Units, their deployment in Taiwan and the Penghu archipelago, and base deployment, this study tries to confer on the role that this Special Attack Units weapon played in that significant era and at the same time investigates Taiwan's historical circumstance and position in this war.
