(Supplement of Memory.
Living in an era of after modernization and globalization, I think I have confusion in identity and a feel of diaspora due to dislocation of place. Entitled “Supplement of Memory, Being in Place”, this thesis started from the concept of “home”. It is an attempt to analyze “I” as an individual in Taiwan, being influenced by historical context of modernization after colonization, as well as the shifting of cultural identity in my own artistic process, how it influences appreciation on beauty and the development and changes of forms and content of the art works. I believe it is a series of process on “recalling memories” and “localization”. This thesis focuses on works from the “Elsewhere” series, “Mr. Universe” series, “Good-to-be-home Luggage” to “Stream may be……Pillow, Stone can Rince……”. The metaphor of home always appears in my works. I used home as a private interactive place between the world and the individual. In these works, they also reveal my emotions affected by culture, society, time and space. I indicate my location in the world through my art works, be it either in terms of culture or individual. Besides, my works show how oneself extended to the world. I thought home is a structure of “oneself – place – Taiwan – world” in my works. My works reflect also oneself inside this structure, and what I am concerned of and sense of diaspora fluctuating inside me. Hence my works always create a “shelter” using images or objects. This might be a kind of compensation for dislocation of my self-identity and sense of belonging. This thesis discuss about the process of my works under these concepts. It is a context from far to near, from scattered around to immobile and from looking to physical senses.
