Due to the rapid technological advancements, people are accustomed to the fluent use of digital media. Although the author typically utilizes three-dimensional effects to structure virtual scenes for illusionary images, for his graduation thesis, the author uses tangible physical installation to demonstrate the effortless distortion of people’s perception of reality. Thus, “Illusionary Perception in Fluid Sculptures” is the focus of this thesis. There are two artworks provided in this thesis which are using fluid sculptures to display a sense of illusion. The evolution of kinetic and installation art and present the influence of sensory distortions in the visual arts will be discussed in this thesis. The pieces also illustrate the particularities of states of matter to facilitate its illusions. The first piece of the artwork, “A stalled distance 0.000000000000000274 light year,” is designed to utilize the precisely calculated, slowed motion of liquids to distract the viewer’s sense of physical place and create the illusion of floating. The second piece, “Time-freezing bomb – past, present, and future,” employs air as an illusionary material. Smoke is sprayed random with penetrating rays of light from flashlights. The beams of light cause the visual distortion of flowing air as a solid vs. its true gaseous state. In this thesis’s concluding statements, the author reflects on possible improvements and other thoughts.
