Lost Daughter tells a story of a father who go abroad for business, abandoning his family. Finally he realizes that he and people like him can’t call the foreign country they reside home, nor the land they originated. Finally, he decides do something to atone for his past mistake. Recently, with the investment environment deteriorating in China, hundreds of Taiwanese enterprises turn back to Taiwan. This film tells the story of a father who is facing a dilemma either to stay in China or return to Taiwan. Many Taiwanese businessmen encounter difficulties after going back to Taiwan since most of them are no longer young. It’s not easy for them to readapt the changing environment in Taiwan. Therefore, many people are caught in an awkward situation: they can’t stay in foreign lands; nor can they go home. This group of people can’t identify with their hometown to a certain extent, and they often lost connection with their relatives in hometown. In the story of this screenplay, the leading role A-Cheng is typical of this kind of Taiwanese businessman. Running business in China, the long distance from home alienates in with his wife and daughter. Subsequently, he marries another woman and has a daughter with her in China. A-Cheng gives most of his love to the younger daughter Lian-Lian in China, but maintains a father-daughter relationship with elder daughter Jia-Xin in Taiwan. This kind of relationship lasts for twenty years. When younger daughter studies in Taiwan, she and her sister Jia-Xin look after each other. However, the younger daughter was drowned when going scuba diving. This breaks the balance that A-Cheng tries to maintain. A-Cheng goes back to Taiwan and meets with his elder daughter, and he is bewildered by the mystery of Lian-Lian ‘s death. A-Cheng realizes in the end that losing younger daughter turns out to be a beginning of getting back another daughter. A-Cheng honestly faces the situation, accepts punishment, and decides to atone for his sin. This is a 90-minutes feature-length screenplay, focusing on father and his two families. His actions seeking the truth behind the death of his daughter eventually cause a storm. The center of the plot is the conflict between two sisters, which eventually leads to the death accidentally caused by the elder daughter, and the cause of the conflict can be traced back to A-Cheng’s failure of being a father in the past twenty years. I hope to use the suspension of dramatic tension to motivate the emotional redemption among family members. I expect this can make the audience focused on the emotional aspect of the characters when watching the film, and also reflect on their own relationships with their family members. Hopefully they will get emotional satisfaction because of this reflection.
