《美國華人》之翻譯與譯評

本論文旨在翻譯《The Chinese in America》(美國華人)一書，探討筆者在翻譯本書時，如何運用翻譯理論與方法，也彙整了筆者翻譯的心得。本論文共分為六章。第一章為緒論，說明本文的研究動機、研究目的與研究方法。第二章為相關背景研究，簡介本書作者及書本內容。第三章為筆者翻譯的步驟，說明筆者翻譯本書的過程。第四章為譯文。第五章為翻譯本書的實務探討，說明英譯中時需注意的事項，並舉出筆者翻譯本書的實例來加以佐證。第六章為結論，筆者在本章提供一些在翻譯上的建議及注意事項，也討論筆者是否達成了先前所設定的研究目的，研究方法是否正確等。這本論文的完成是一漫長且艱辛的歷程，翻譯本書除了讓筆者學以致用外，筆者也衷心希望本書的資料，能提供其他的翻譯工作者作參考，也能讓所有閱讀本論文的讀者對華人移民史有更深的了解。

This thesis includes a translated text of The Chinese in America and a discussion of theory and methods to the task; it details the process of author’s translating the book. This thesis is divided into six chapters. Chapter I introduces the background, goals and methodology of this study. Chapter II gives a brief introduction of the author of the book and the book itself. Chapter III gives a thorough account of the entire translation process. Chapter IV is the author’s translation. Chapter V discusses the problems while translating English to Chinese; it also gives some examples from the author’s translation. Chapter VI presents some suggestions based on the author’s experience in translating the book, discusses whether the author achieves the goals of this study and whether the author uses the appropriate methodology. Finishing this thesis is a long and hard-working process. The translation of the book has provided an excellent opportunity for the author to put translation theory into practice. Hopefully, this thesis will provide other translators ways and ideas of the author’s translation; this translation will give a better understanding for the readers who are interested in the immigration history of the Chinese.
