ABSTRACT The main purpose of this research was to investigate the dominant intelligence in relation to English reading proficiency and further examine its predictive power on English reading proficiency among college freshmen. Additionally, this study explored whether there existed significant differences across different English reading proficiency levels, genders and majors in terms of their types of intelligences. To achieve these aims, 332 college freshmen from seven different departments in a northern university participated in the study. The multiple intelligences (MI) inventory and English reading proficiency test were used as two main instruments. The MI inventory was adopted to identify the participants’ distribution of multiple intelligences; in addition, English reading proficiency test was used to measure their English reading proficiency levels. The quantitative data were analyzed through correlation analysis, regression analysis, descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test and one-way ANOVA. The findings of the study were summarized as follows: 1. Interpersonal intelligence was the strongest intelligence whereas musical intelligence was the weakest intelligence among the participated college students. 2. Logical-mathematical and musical intelligences were related to college students’ English reading proficiency and further can be used to predict students’ English reading proficiency. 3. High achievers showed significantly higher logical-mathematical and musical intelligences than low achievers. 4. There were significant differences in the distribution of multiple intelligences across different genders. Female students manifested stronger intelligences in verbal-linguistic, musical and intrapersonal intelligences while male students showed strong tendency for logical-mathematical, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic and naturalist intelligences. 5. Major differences significantly influenced the participants’ intelligence types.Students from the Department of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language had the best performance on verbal- linguistic intelligence. Students from the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering manifested the strongest preference for logical-mathematical intelligence while students from the Departments of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language had the weakest performance on the logical-mathematical intelligence. As for students majoring in the Department of Architecture, they had the strongest spatial and bodily-kinesthetic intelligences. With respect to musical intelligence, the results showed that students from the Department of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language had the best performance. Additionally, students majoring in the Department of Financial and Economic Law had the best performance on interpersonal intelligence than that of students with different majors. Finally, the results revealed that students from the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering manifested the strongest preference for naturalist intelligence. Based on the research findings, some pedagogical implications were offered to language teachers and material designers to facilitate EFL reading instruction.
