使用線上媒體幫助台灣地區大學生增進英語學習成效—應用TED演說之研究

摘要


近年來的研究顯示,線上媒體之使用,像是使用YouTube上的影片,有助於語言學習者,特別是那些想要增進英語聽力和閱讀能力的學習者。TED,一個和YouTube有著許多相似特色的網站,可以提供英語學習者最佳的生活化英語演講素材。因此,本研究旨在探討使用線上媒體(TED)幫助台灣地區大學生增進英語聽力、英語閱讀能力以及英語學習動機之成效。研究對象為選修台灣北部某大學之實用英語課程的大學生(其中一班為實驗組,另一班為對照組)。在實驗前後,研究對象各接受一次英語能力測驗,以及有關外語學習動機的問卷調查。此外,實驗後,實驗組中的15個研究對象接受訪談。另外,蒐集到的資料以量化和質化的方法進行分析之。統計學上的結果顯示,使用TED網站上之英語演講影片幫助台灣地區大學生增進英語聽力、英語閱讀能力以及英語學習動機之成效並不顯著。然而,從英語能力測驗前後分數上的差異得知,研究對象在英語聽力以及閱讀能力上有所進步,並且對使用TED網站上之英語演講影片幫助他們增進英語聽力以及閱讀能力,持正面態度。再者,研究對象覺得TED網站上之演講影片主題貼近他們的日常生活,因而,他們認為這些影片有助於增進英語學習動機。因此,研究結果建議,藉由精心地挑選影片主題以及設計課堂活動,TED網站上的英語演講影片會有助於幫助台灣地區大學生增進英語聽力、英語閱讀能力以及英語學習動機。

Recently, some studies revealed the use of on-line media such as the videos available on YouTube is helpful to language learners, especially for those who want to enhance their English listening proficiency as well as reading proficiency. TED, a website sharing many similar features to YouTube, can provide best English talks related to people’s daily life to English learners. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of using the speech videos on TED to enhance Taiwanese college students’ English listening and reading proficiency as well as learning motivation. Undergraduates in two Practical English classes (control and experimental groups) in the 2012 spring semester (February-June) at a university in northern Taiwan were given one English proficiency Test, and one questionnaire (Foreign Language Learning Motivation Scale) before and after the treatment. Also, 15 undergraduates from the experimental group were interviewed. In addition, both quantitative (independent sample T-test) and qualitative (analytical procedures) methods were used to analyze the data. The statistic results showed that there is no significant effect of using the speech videos on TED to enhance Taiwanese college students’ English listening and reading proficiency as well as learning motivation. However, with the result of test score difference of English Proficiency Test, college students made enhancement in their English proficiency (listening and reading) and held positive attitudes toward using speech videos from TED to help them improve their English listening and reading proficiency. Also, from the data of college students’ perception, speech videos from TED are helpful for enhancing their motivation to learn English because topics of speech videos from TED are relevant to their daily lives. Therefore, it is suggested that speech videos from TED be used to help college students improve their English listening and reading proficiency as well as enhance their learning motivation with careful selection of the topics of speech videos and careful design of activities.
