Abstract In recent years, most Taiwanese people have lived a life of sufficiency but also suffered an increase of the misery index. Taipei City, in particular, has been rated as the most miserable city in the nation. The various stressors of life cause anxiety and depression in people living in this city and further affect their health. Some people even bring these stressors home, causing family frictions, domestic violence, and even other more serious problems. Therefore, many people will relax or alleviate the stress through leisure activities on holidays. However, if their living space can also be shaped into a leisure environment, they can also relax and release tension in physical, mental, and spiritual aspects. How to “leisurize living space” has become an imperative issue. Based on a qualitative research framework, this study conducted a survey on and in-depth interview with users of leisurized living space and analyzed foreign and domestic cases to understand their leisure styles and perceptions in the living space. Further, this study also explored the relationship between users’ psychology and spatial features of interior design, such as design style, texture, color, lighting, and furniture. Results showed that “leisurization of living space” is a goal that many people aspire to attain. Designers should meet users’ needs in three types of leisure activities: (1) Psychological leisure activities: Creation of the natural atmosphere in the space should be emphasized. Designers should create a sensory leisure context through use of lines, colors, lighting, and audio effects to release their mental and spiritual tension. (2) Physical leisure activities: In addition to designing different leisure facilities depending on users’ concentration and intensity of the activities, designers should use environmental facilities that stimulate users’ senses to relax their body and mind. (3) Social leisure activities: Designers should design or decorate the leisure space with more professional considerations depending on the frequency and intensity of leisure activities. In the arrangement of furniture, they should create more flexible combinations of furniture to enable users to live with pleasure and health in the leisure environment.
