A Study of Body Experiences In The Itinerary of Le Corbusier’s Journey to the East

“The joy of remembering is uplifting to carry away the sight of such things as a new part of my being, hereafter inseparable”(Le Corbusier,1996a:177),Le Corbusier sighed with emotion when he visited The Parthenon in 1911.Journey to the East is a representation of The East that record Le Corbusier’s gaze with text and sketch. This book is permeated with the intuitional discovery, high praises, and deep though to the Oriental arts, humanities aesthetics, landscape and space. On this trip, he established his own observation method. And these body experiences of the journey repeated again and again, the sensory memory of the space is constantly mentioned in his subsequent construction works, writings and speeches. Also, these body experiences brought him the state without interruption in his great life. This research bases on the body experiences in the book Journey to the East, and explore Le Corbusier’s motivation, how he journeyed, the way he observed and recorded. And how he recorded what he saw and thought with the intuitional observation in the five months of the moving, especially the deep implication, meaning of the representational lines he drew by the simple sketch. More importantly, the purpose of this research is to study how the body experiences become the nutrients of his thought and the source of his works in the future after he emancipated his own body and open his sense, after he understand the visible / invisible and the state mixed inner / outer, after he communicated with the world through the moving body.
