問題預覽形式對EFL學習者的聽力影響

A Study on the Effect of Question Preview Formats on EFL Learners’ Listening

摘要


以問題預覽做為聽前活動之研究相當廣泛 (e.g., Berne, 1995; Buck, 1991; Chang & Read, 2006) ,然而這些研究的結果並無一致的共識,且此類研究並無著重於問題預覽的問題形式。至於其他研究 (Kang, 2012; Liu, 2009; Yanagawa & Green, 2008) 則更深入地探究不同預覽形式對聽力理解的影響,本研究也將延續此主題,更進一步研究此問題。 研究設計如下:75位EFL大學生參與此研究。研究主要分兩階段,在第一階段時,受試者須填寫背景問卷,也測試他們的聽力能力,以檢視他們是否具備相似的聽力水準。之後,他們才可繼續參與第二階段的實驗。在第二階段時則測試受試者的聽力理解能力。受試者被隨機分為三組:1) 問題和選項完全預覽 (FQP)、2) 選項預覽 (AOP) 以及3) 題幹預覽 (QSP) 並參與聽前活動和聽力理解考試。 研究結果顯示:三組在英語聽力表現並沒有明顯的差異,但不同組別對處理預覽問題和作答時分別採用不同的策略。此外,大多數的受試者表示在聽對話的過程中,不覺得有受到題目形式的干擾。

The effect of using question preview as a pre-listening activity on listening comprehension has been extensively investigated (e.g., Berne, 1995; Buck, 1991; Chang & Read, 2006). However, findings are not yet consistent because of the use of different question preview formats. Therefore, other studies (Kang, 2012; Liu, 2009; Yanagawa & Green, 2008) have attempted to better understand the effect of different question preview formats. The present study extends research into this topic. The research design is as follows. Seventy-five EFL learners participated in the study. A background questionnaire was given to participants, and they took a listening proficiency test to ensure they were at a similar listening proficiency level. Next, they were randomly divided into three groups: 1) Question Stem Preview (QSP), 2) Answer Option Preview (AOP), and 3) Full Question Preview (FQP), before starting the pre-listening activity and listening comprehension test. Results show that different formats do not affect the listening performance of EFL learners who are at a similar listening proficiency level. Different groups are found to use different strategies to preview questions and determine answers. In addition, most learners do not feel affected by different types of formats while listening to the dialogue.
