A comparison of two pedagogies for training English listening comprehension

In recent years, the internationalization leads to foreign language skills increasingly important in the world. Many people emphases on foreign language teaching, especially in the English. During the past years, as technological rapid changes, many technology-assisted learning strategies have presented, such as multimedia learning. Multimedia learning make more vivid and real and let second language easier to learn. In Taiwan, learning English as a second language typically focuses on reading and writing and not on listening comprehension and speaking. Often, English teachers would ask their students to watch「Let’s Talk in English」and「Studio Classroom」and use these two programs to teach English listening comprehension. Both「Let’s Talk in English」and 「Studio Classroom」try to use conversations between two hosts or conversations among imitated characters to teach. The resulting effects may be limited by boredom that comes with the watching of such programs. In this research, an alternative way of training English listening comprehension is proposed. Specifically, students were asked to watch movie fragments with two important aspects. The first aspect is that the movie fragments can get learners' attention. The second aspect is that a selected movie fragment must contain something reminiscent of a "clear speech." A related educational experiment was conducted, and it is found that students do prefer this approach to the traditional approach for training their English listening comprehension ability.
