延伸閱讀對於台灣大學生學習動機與學習成效的影響

摘要   近年來,已有越來越多的教師利用延伸閱讀來幫助學生學習外語。本研究旨在探討延伸閱讀對於大學生的閱讀理解能力和學習動機的影響。此研究的受測者為67名大二學生,並將他們分為實驗組及控制組。在為期十週的研究中,實驗組的學生們除了教科書外,亦需閱讀一本英文分級讀本及三篇文章作為課外閱讀教材,而控制組的學生則只需閱讀教科書內的文章。研究者以閱讀能力測驗、學習動機問卷及一對一訪談收集研究資料。此研究結果顯示,在實驗結束後,實驗組比控制組在閱讀理解能力方面進步更多。而根據動機問卷的前後測結果比較顯示,兩個組別在學習動機方面並沒有顯著差異。然而,此研究所收集到的質化資料顯示,實驗組的學生對於利用延伸閱讀學習英文持正向的態度。根據受訪學生們的說法,此研究所使用之延伸閱讀教材的內容非常實用且有趣。同時,他們也認為延伸閱讀有助於提升學習興趣、閱讀能力和單字量。最後,研究者也提供了一些建議給未來致力於延伸閱讀教學的研究者作為參考。

Abstract Extensive reading (ER) has been implemented in more and more foreign language classrooms in recent years. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of integrating extensive reading into a college English class on students’ reading comprehension and learning motivation. The participants of this study were 67 students in two sophomore English classes, and they were divided into the experimental group (n=35) and the control group (n=32). During the ten-week experiment, the students of the experimental group were required to read a graded reader and three articles except the textbook, and students of the control group were taught by the textbook only. In this study, the reading comprehension tests, motivation questionnaires, and face-to-face interview were used to collect data. The results of this study showed that the mean score of the experimental group on the reading posttest increased 11.3 points compared with the pretest, while the control group’s mean score on the posttest gained 2.1 points in comparison to the pretest. The findings indicated that the experimental group did have a better improvement in reading comprehension after the treatment. For the results of learning motivation improvement, both the two groups did not improve significantly after the treatment. However, the qualitative data indicated that students in the experimental group had positive attitudes toward extensive reading. According to the interviewees, the extensive reading materials used in class were interesting and practical, which could help them increase learning motivation, vocabulary, and reading ability. Some implications, limitations, and recommendations for future research were also discussed in the end of this study.
