Over time, spaces available in urban areas are dwindling incessantly. Christian churches, which used to be all free-standing buildings in the past, are now situated in modern building in Taiwan, due to a high population density in urban areas. Under the influence of urban changes, the indoor space of church fulfills diverse functions to meet the modern life. Hence, aside for fulfilling religious purposes, whether the use of a church’s space accommodates contemporary lifestyle becomes a subject that is worthy of discussion. This study aims to explore the development and innovation of urban churches in the planning and design of interior space. Tianmu Evangelical Christian Church was chosen as a case study. With its small space and basic functions, the old Tianmu Evangelical Christian Church could no longer satisfy churchgoers’ needs for various activities and functions. Thus, a new Tianmu Evangelical Christian Church has been built near its old site. The new church comes with an underground parking lot of 700 ping (1 ping is approximately 3.305 sq.m.), in order to provide a church space and activity venue that caters to modern churchgoers’ needs and lifestyle. This study chose the construction of new Tianmu Evangelical Christian Church as the object of analysis, and conducted spatial planning analysis on construction site, route planning, utility, and the entire atmosphere. By attending the design and construction meetings on the new Tianmu Evangelical Christian Church, and by identifying and analyzing the factors for consideration in building an urban church, this study proposed design reference guidelines for reference of church space planning in the future.
