郭寶崑戲劇文本中的新加坡現代性

摘要

新加坡在快速現代化與工業化發展過程中，出現種種有別於前工業化時代的社會現象。例如，廣受宣傳且明顯可以觀察見得的高效率政府、國際金融貿易、都市化、菁英教育、嚴刑峻罰的法治與秩序等等。這些現象很輕易地可以自媒體或官方論述得以體察，亦有相當多的學術研究加以討論。然而，伴隨劇烈社會變遷而來的如人際關係改變、價值觀變遷等等深層的社會文化現象，較少受到注意與探討。本研究試圖由新加坡具代表性的在地文化文本--郭寶崑的戲劇文本，並以現代性理論中，如資本主義形成、社會結構轉型及工具理性等觀點，勾勒描繪新加坡現代化過程中所帶來的價值體系變遷，以及隨該變遷涵化而來的社會現象與關係。
透過郭寶崑戲劇文本的分析，可歸納出新加坡的工業化促使社會轉型—從「傳統」到「現代」的變遷。此一變遷造帶來強烈的文化價值變異，具體而言包含文化物質化的傾向、人倫關係的轉變及個人與體制間的矛盾。這些呈現，無異是郭寶崑對國家追求工業化或現代化的質疑，或說對新加坡追求現代性的代價與後果的一種反思。

The rapid modernization and industrialization in Singapore had led to some new phenomena which are different from those in pre-industrialized age. These phenomena in Singapore society are well-known and impressed through the media or its official report, such as its efficient government, international trade and finance, urbanization, elite education, and draconian laws. Also, these phenomena are commonly discussed by many studies. However, some inner social-cultural phenomena caused by the huge changes and transition in its society, such as the changing interpersonal relationship and values, are rarely noticed and discussed.
Through the scripts of Pao-Kun Kuo’s plays, which best reveals Singapore’s local culture, the study aims to specify and discuss the changes of values in the process of modernization, the social phenomena caused by these changes, and their relationships. Moreover, some crucial components of the theory of Modernity, like formation of capitalism, society structure transition, and instrumental rationality, are also combined in the discussion of the study.
Based on the analysis of Pao-Kun Kuo’s scripts in the study, it can be concluded that the industrialization in Singapore urged the society to transit from “tradition” to “modern.” The transition brought about enormous changes of cultural values, such as materialized culture, transition of human relations, and the contradiction of personal and systematic interests. The scripts unquestionably not only reveal Pao-Kun Kuo’s doubts about the pursuit of industrialization and modernization in his country, but serve as the reflection of the prices and consequences of modernization in Singapore.
