In modern Taiwan history, Lee Teng-hui is undoubtedly an important and special personality. This essay is a study focused on Taiwan's political leadership in the period of Lee Teng-hui's administration, 1988-2000. It outlines Lee's personal background, education, and his time and circumstances, endeavors to explain the elements in the formation of his distinctive character, and discusses his political leadership style, that of a scholar politician, in the contexts of roles, factions and order of relationships. Lee's ideas and thought, as well as the process by which he led the KMT and the ROC toward localization and democratization also received a brief treatment.
