In the recent years, Near Field Communication (NFC) technology receives much attention because of its innovative application model and convenience in communication. On the other hand, social networking and context-aware applications boomed recently. Both provide information/services dependent on the neighboring users or context. When a number of users form a group for certain purpose, NFC can be the enabling technology for the communication among group members for providing social networking and context -aware applications. In this thesis, we propose a novel group-based NFC application model. It will be investigated how NFC can be utilized to support group operations. Potential issues in NFC group operations are group planning, group formation, group communication, and group access control. In this thesis, beyond the one-to-one NFC communication mode, we discuss the potential NFC applications for effective interaction between group members. Security and access control are both considered in the design of the proposed group-based NFC application model.
