The purpose of this study was to investigate the connections between the Beat Generation and the twenty-four Han Shan poems translated by Gary Snyder. Snyder did not adjust his translations to fit with the Beat Generation. In fact, it was the Beat Generation that found meaning and correspondences with Han Shan. Due to Kerouac, the Beat Generation saw Han Shan and Snyder as their heroes. This study analyzes the twenty-four Han Shan poems, and there are comparisons between the translation of Snyder and The Dharma Bums as well. The aim of this research was to find the reasons and connections about why Han Shan resonated with the Beat Generation.
