Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of marathon running on homocysteine (Hcy) and C-reactive protein (CRP) of men in different fitness levels. Methods: Eighteen participants were divided into two groups, including nine high fitness level (HF; marathon finished time = 219.2 ± 17.35 min) and nine low fitness level subjects (LF; marathon finished time = 299.0 ± 31.28 min), in a marathon race. Blood samples were taken Pre-race, immediately postrace and 24h postrace to analyze Hcy and CRP in all subjects. Results: There was no significant difference between HF and LF in pre-race Hcy and CRP. Immediately postrace Hcy (11.66 ± 2.45 μmol/L) was significantly lower than pre-race (13.11 ± 1.86 μmol/L) and 24h postrace Hcy in the HF (p < .05). There was no significant difference among pre-race, immediately postrace and 24h postrace Hcy in the LF. 24h postrace CRP (HF: 0.88 ± 0.41 mg/dL, LF: 1.58 ± 1.20 mg/dL) was significantly higher than pre-race (HF: 0.12 ± 0.12 mg/dL, LF: 0.16 ± 0.16 mg/dL) and immediately postrace CRP (HF: 0.12 ± 0.12 mg/dL, LF: 0.13 ± 0.07 mg/dL) (p < .05). Conclusion: Among different fitness level recreational runners, the baselines of Hcy and CRP were not influenced by different fitness levels. However, fitness levels would affect the change of the immediately postrace Hcy. In contrast, fitness levels would not affect the change of CRP, the CRP of HF and LF both increased after a period of time after marathon running.
