Negative ion are formed when atoms gain electrons. Physiologically, negative ion can decrease blood pressure, serotonin and dopamine during recovery after exercise. The electric instrument (Nature, Yokychen, Taiwan) used in this study can generate a static field of minus 5000 volts with alternating current (AC), causing a negative electricity condition in the body. Purpose: To understand the effects of negative ion stimulation on physiological responses during recovery after intense exercise. Methods: Fourteen subjects participated in the experiment. All subjects were healthy adults (average age 20 + 2.7 year, height 175.1 + 6.2 cm, weight 67.1 + 11.3 kg). This study used a repeated measure double blind counter balanced order at seven-day intervals. After running at 85﹪VO2max on treadmill for ten minutes, the subjects received negative ion stimulation or false negative ion stimulation (without electricity) during recovery. Oxygen uptake, excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), ventilation (VE), heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV) and blood pressure (BP) were collected at rest before exercise as well as during recovery. The data were analyzed with repeated measures two-way analysis of variance by SPSS for Windows 10.0 packaged software. Significance was accepted at α=.05. Results: Negative ion stimulation shows no significant effects on oxygen uptake, EPOC, VE, HR, HRV, BP during recovery after intense exercise (p>.05). Conclusion: Because negative ion stimulation does not influence oxygen uptake, EPOC, VE, HR, HRV, BP during recovery after intense exercise, negative ion stimulation is not an appropriate method for facilitating recovery after intense exercise.
