My parents grew up in Taiwan during the period of Japanese colonial rule. After the Republic of China relocated its government to Taiwan, their earlier personal stories were all sealed in memories. During the time when Martial Law was enforced, some topics were unspeakable in conversations. Occasionally, while I was playing around my parents, they would talk about the life they used to have; these real-life stories were, to me, as if ancient folklores. Sometimes my parents would take out from a well-kept wooden box silver yuan, the currency used during Japanese occupation. Those neatly folded discolored banknotes emitted an indistinct moldy smell; this is part of my childhood memories – the vanished currency. Along with the turning of the giant wheel of time, came the progress of technology. The development of Internet and Cloud technologies has made mass communication much faster and more common and transcended the boundaries between countries. This is especially the case for China and Taiwan; through the interaction of trade and economy, art and culture, the political relationship between Taiwan and China has gradually interweaved. On top of that, Taiwanese and Chinese people are bound by blood. Consequently, the doctrine of One-China policy has emerged and become a controversial and recurring agenda. Maybe like the Eurozone, eventually the currencies between these two regions will be unified; New Taiwan Dollars and their jingling sounds will become “historical relics”. As a native-born Taiwanese, I love the land of Taiwan. This deep love leads to constant, vague worries about the prospect of Taiwan. I wonder if someday Taiwanese currency will turn into mere memories, same as the “folklores” from Japanese occupation period. The notions of “vanished currency” and “historical relics” have been lingering in my mind. What are my feelings hidden underneath? Anxiety? Fear? Or commiseration? My parents’ experiences were a lesson for me to remember. v By creating artistic motifs, I attempted to convert those currencies and the stories behind them into eternal codes. Hopefully, via my work of art, the genuine care for this land could arise in the Taiwanese society. Moreover, through artistic images, an encouraging, festive energy is conveyed to the public and the promising insight towards our future could spread.
