Effects of the Virtual Reality Somatosensory Games on Motor Performance of Elementary School Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Studies have shown that motor performance deficits is not uncommon in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Traditional exercise and physical activity programs have been proved as effective interventions resolving the motor performance deficits for children with ASD. This study aimed to examine the effects of a new form of physical activities, that is virtual reality somatosensory video games, on motor performance in elementary students with ASD. A single subject, cross-subject A-B-A', experimental research design was used. Three elementary students fulfilling the inclusion criteria were recruited. All students participated in a total of 8 weeks. , 3 times a week, 40 minutes each time (including two 5-minute rest intervals in the middle, the actual intervention time is 30 minutes) virtual reality somatosensory games intervention. Considering the economic condition, a projected technique was used to convey the virtual gaming environment. Before entering the baseline and after the retention phases, the Movement ABC and the Movement Coordination Questionnaire (Chinese version) were used collecting pre- and post-intervention motor performance. During the intervention phase, the gross andfine motor performance and postural control performance were measured weekly with three customized motor performance tasks. The collected data was processed and the intervention effects was shown by the results of visual analysis, C statistics and effect size. The results showed that participated in projected virtual reality video games training program for 8 weeks, three times a week and 30 minutes each time, were effective in improving gross motor and postural control performance of elementary students with moderate to high effect size. Future study examining differential effects of types of somatosensory video game is needed. Suggestions regarding to the use of the projected virtural reality video games in affecting the motor performance of elementary students with ASD were high-lighted.
