台北市「新舞臺」的歷史脈絡及其當代發展與專業價值之研究

「新舞臺」前身為日治時期大稻埕地區的劇場「淡水戲館」以及「臺灣新舞臺」，戰後在台北市信義區重生，是當代台灣最重要的劇場之一，不只擁有悠久的歷史，也擁有獨特的當代意義。常被譽為「第一座屬於台灣人的劇場」、「第一座專為中國傳統戲曲演出而設置的劇場」、以及其作為「『商業劇場』此革新類型的戲劇觀演場域在台灣發展的指標性案例」等。然而西元2013年，「新舞臺」突爆發「存廢爭議」；在眾聲喧嘩中，橫跨政治、商業、文化等社會各界，對於「新舞臺」歷史記憶與劇場內涵之討論隨即展開，也成為台灣近年來最重要的文化事件之一。本研究緣起於對於「新舞臺存廢爭議」之好奇，而以「新舞臺」劇場歷史為研究主體，嘗試透過歷史文獻之耙梳，釐清「新舞臺存廢爭議」的歷史遠因，及「新舞臺」本身作為個案，可能提供給當代劇場環境的啟示。本文首先檢視了「新舞臺」在台灣不同歷史時期的劇場環境、發展情形、精神內涵、以及危機轉機；一方面，透過細讀與整理「新舞臺」的歷史脈絡，有機會梳理台灣劇場史自身脈絡，而得能保存「新舞臺」在台灣劇場史上的成果；另一方面，「針對新舞臺存廢爭議」，雖然「新舞臺」在爭議發展期間似乎深陷民間、企業、政府三方相掣肘之立場，但本研究亦透過收集、比對並分析報章媒體的相關報導發現，這樣的僵局其實仍有許多協商可能，此或許也能提供未來台灣公部門與私部門之間，合作以維繫文化發展的啟發與借鏡。

As one of the most important theaters in modern Taiwan, Novel Hall was a post-war construction in Xinyi District, Taipei City. It is the reestablishment of Tamsui Theater and Taiwan New Stage in Dadaocheng area during the Japanese colonial period. Although Novel Hall is a time-honored theater, it also carries particular significance for the modern society. Novel Hall is often reputed to be “the first theater for Taiwanese people”, “the first theater set up for the performances of traditional Chinese theatrical opera”, “the pioneer in the development of the commercial theaters, the novel fields for drama appreciation in Taiwan” and so on. However, the existence of Novel Hall was at risk. The debates over whether Novel Hall should be shut down had gone fierce. The discussion on the historical memories and theatrical significance had begun in the fields of politics, commerce and cultures. It was one of the most important cultural incidents in Taiwan in recent years. Due to the inquisitiveness of “the dispute over the shutdown of Novel Hall”, this study aims to discuss the remote cause of the dispute through historical literature review. We also attempted to figure out the inspiration of Novel Hall to the modern theatrical environment. This study first reviews the theatrical environments, the developmental situations, the spiritual indications and the crises and chances of Novel Hall in Taiwan in different historical times. We aimed to preserve the achievements of Novel Hall in the history of Taiwan theaters by reviewing and systemizing the historical contexts of Novel Hall and the history of Taiwan theaters. Moreover, the discussion on “the dispute over the shutdown of Novel Hall” is addressed. The dispute created tension among the people, the enterprises and the government. However, we had come to realize that there are actually many possibilities of negotiation to break this deadlock through the collection, comparisons and analyses of the related media coverage. As a result, this study can be served as a reference and inspiration for the cooperation of between the public and the private sectors on culture developments.
