Museum digital archive retrieval system gathers the collection information, and makes it searchable and available to the public. The paper aims to understand how the system fosters users’ knowledge of antiques, and focuses on its effects upon learning. The study invites museum hobbyist to join the test on National Palace Museum Antiques Digital Archives Retrieval System, who is thought to be the potential users and experienced in museums. Three simulated work task situations were designed based on different levels of knowledge. In order to describe the information search process of users, interaction with the Antiques System was collected by observation and post-interview. The study applied the theory of Vakkari’s article “Searching as Learning” in analyzing users’ behaviors during information searching, and discussed how learning occurs in the search process. 8 participants completed the learning tasks with the Antiques System. The results indentified three factors which have impact on the outcome of learning: prior knowledge, level of involvement, and search skills. Learner with prior knowledge captured proficiency with using the System. Besides, the relation between searching and learning was verified. Learner with search skills showed the phenomenon of learning and search success, both in its searching process and task performance.
