This study is to research and analyze The Great Gatsby’s Chinese translations in Taiwan through historical perspective, document analysis and interviews of translators, tracing the first Chinese Edition Yong-Heng-Chih-Lian (The Eternal Love) written by Shu-Sheng Huang and comparing the following tranlations with George Kao’s translation, and understanding those translators’ performance and contribution. The Great Gatsby had been utilized originally as part of US’s cultural diplomacy in Cold War and has become one of the best-selling books and English learning material. The novel’s Chinese translations in Taiwan not only reflect the influence of George Kao’s translation, but show the growing presence of translators, who took translation training and have more experience, and, the most important of all, using their writing styles or translation strategies to step out and challenge George Kao’s shadow in their own time.
