「Square dance」 signifies one of the popular activities which the Chinese elderly favor. Square dance not only involves such different issues as promotion of body health and strength as well as noise disturbance but also has become an inevitable tendency that forms a heated debate on square dance in the academic field. Many scholars provided different ideas about square dance such as exercise, health, or public management etc.. In addition to square dance studies in China, in fact, there has been concerns about square dance in Taiwan. For example, there are some square dance teams in Toufen and Zhunan areas, Taiwan, which shows a lot of possible hints of this newly popular activity. Tasty Open at Shang Shun Plaza has become the biggest place for square dance teams in Toufen and Zhunan areas. In the meanwhile, various square dance teams can be found at different locations, and even when local government hold activities, square dance is always the top priority for place promotion. Thus,「square dance」 has turned into an emerging leisure activity for the elderly in Toufen and Zhunan areas. Why has square dance become a new leisure activity in the past years so rapidly? How does square dance fascinate many elderly people to attend this activity? This study aims to investigate the reasons why elder people dance at Shang Shun Plaza. This research findings are as follows. First, square dance in Taiwan is flexible and free-styled. The study argues, square dance in Taiwan is closer to Chinese square dance than folk dance. Second, the legitimacy of dancing on open space is not given and fixed but negotiating by different users. Third, square dance embodies different affect reactions about elderly female people. Fourth, in this study, square dance successfully help some dancers resist family pressure. Fifth, square dance has, in this study, developed a lot of similarities as「traditional Ding-Tao(Troupe)」. Therefore, the reason why square dance in Toufen and Zhunan areas can become a new leisure activity is the combination of complicated space politics, social network, affect flow.
