臺灣電視劇《華燈初上》英文字幕翻譯研究

近年來串流平台興起，臺灣的電影、電視劇多了不同的播放管道，開始加上各種外語的字幕翻譯，以期將華語內容推向國際。自 2021 年年底熱播的《華燈初上》（Light the Night），除了有英文字幕，還有英文配音，是目前臺灣比較少見的影視作品，故作為研究文本。本論文以功能對等理論、文本類型、目的論為基礎，並統整出字幕、配音、對白的翻譯與創作原則，再蒐集劇中的文化詞實例來分析翻譯策略。其中，粗話先按照認知心理學家 Steven Pinker 的理論分類，再參考李運興教授提出的翻譯策略來分析；熟語等其他文化詞則參照 Gottlieb、Pedersen 的翻譯策略模型，並適時採用文化補償策略提出修改建議。此外，劇中角色會說國語、台語、日語，因此也會探討英文字幕和配音如何處理多語言混用的對白。研究結果發現英文版的對白使角色較不生動，也少了多元文化和語言混用的特色，相較於中文版顯得單一化。

With the rise of streaming platforms in recent years, Taiwanese movies and TV dramas have become available in different channels and been translated into various foreign languages to internationally promote Chinese content. Popular since the end of 2021, Light the Night has both English subtitles and dubbing, which is relatively rare in the film and television production industry in Taiwan. Therefore, it has been selected as the research text. Based on functional equivalence theory, text types, and skopos theory, the study summarizes the translation and creation principles of subtitles, dubbing, and dialogues and then collects examples of culture-specific items in the drama for the analysis of translation strategies. Among the culture-specific items, vulgar words are first classified according to Steven Pinker’s theory and analyzed with reference to Professor Li Yunxing’s translation strategies. Idioms and other culture-specific items are analyzed with reference to the translation strategy model of Gottlieb and Pedersen and revised with cultural compensation strategies. In addition, as the characters in the series can speak Mandarin, Taiwanese, and Japanese, the paper further explores the outcome of multilingual dialogues being translated into English subtitles and dubbing. The study finds that the English version makes the characters less vivid and lacks the characteristics of multiculturalism and language mixing. Compared with the Chinese version, the English version appears more simplistic.
