We live in a world full of statistics. Each day, we encounter several ones on mass media. Ignorance of statistics or Innumeracy can lead to the misunderstanding or misinterpretation of our world. Motivated by the four different types of attitudes toward statistics described by Best (2001), the present study aims to explore this important but neglected research topic. The present paper analyzes the respondents from SanYing social survey implemented by NTPU Sociology in 2012. The attitude measurement toward statistical number is constructed based on the ABC theory of attitudes. Latent class analysis is utilized to examine the types of attitudes. Results show that SanYing residents’ types of attitudes toward statistics can be classified into three categories: types of discussion, propagation, and passiveness. After obtaining the three types of attitudes people carried toward statistics, the author uses multinomial logistic regression to examine the factors that might associate with one’s types of attitudes. The results indicate that education, gender, frequency of discussion with others, and evaluation of news on media are related to one’s types of attitudes toward statistics.
