Application of arresters for surge protection is studied in this thesis. The characteristic of arresters analyzed are mainly of 11.4kV, 22.8kV, 69kV, 161kV and 345kV grades which adopted by Taipower. The ATP software package is used to simulate the energy on the impulse test of the arresters. The lightning statistical data and ground flash density of lightning are analyzed. The result observed is helpful to the protection design, which reduces the probability of losing power supplied and damage of equipments. Finally, the influence of different position which arresters installed on overhead distribution system is studied.
