This paper presents the development of two metering systems, one for air and another one for water flows. Two devices use these metering systems; the Green Digital Lung Air Flow Meter and the Self Power Pipe Flow Meter. Flow metering devices are one of the most important apparatus to measure/control fluid flows. In recent years, they have advanced into digital era with the development of science and technology. However, batteries and wired electricity are still the major operating power. In this proposed system the air/water flow drives the rotor of generator to generate electricity. The dynamic energy of the flowing fluid is converted into electric energy to recharge or power the flow meter unit and therefore obsolete the replacement of batteries or to eliminate the lengthy electric power supply wires. Although flow measurement and power source could be two separate arrangements setups, a technique to achieve both goals using same generator is explained in detail. It was seen from the experiment that the GDLAM/SPPFM systems would produce more electric power than the basic needs for an embedded digital measuring unit, leaving rooms for growing features such as wireless communication, and data storage. It was also proved that by using permanent magnets a reliable accuracy can be achieved. This accuracy is crucial for both systems. Therefore, it was one of the mayor concerns at the design stage.
