Previous research reported that in programming learning activity most students encounter several problems related to logical thinking, the understanding of basic concepts, and debugging. Generally, to develop programming ability requires students to continually practice exercises, which cannot sustain a long time unless they are adequately motivated. Hence, how to combine useful learning strategy and tools to prompt students programming learning performance becomes an important issue. Facebook (FB) is currently considered as the most widely used and popular platform for social networking service (SNS) among university students. Many researchers have identified several benefits of educational usage of FB such as improvement of students’ communication, collaboration, and resource sharing. Though FB is popular and widely used by university students, few studies investigate the effect of using FB on learning performance and how to use FB as a learning strategy in the learning activity. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of using FB on programming learning activity. A total of 120 freshman students were invited to join in this study. Two classes were divided into a control group (sixty students) and an experimental group (sixty students). Before and after the experiment, all the participants of the two groups completed a pre-test and post-test. A one-way ANCOVA analysis was used to examine the differences of learning achievement between the two groups. After the experiment, the students of the experimental group were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding learning confidence, motivation, attitude, and the perceived usefulness of FB in programming learning activity. According to the research results, the study found that there was a significant difference in the students’ learning achievement between two groups. Additionally, the results also show that using FB can enhance students’ learning attitude. Regarding the effects of using FB in programming learning activity, most of the students expressed that there exists the following benefits: (1) using FB can enable them to learn actively, (2) FB can provide learners with more opportunities to interact with peers and instructor, (3) the content presentation of FB is diversify and richness, and (4) the frequency of using FB in learning activity is higher than that of using traditional e-learning platform, particularly course discussion activity.
