The goal of reliability is to assure that a structure adequately performs its intended function when operating under specified environmental conditions. This paper presents a reliability based design for mechanical problems. The reliability based design is important to obtain optimal design characterized by low probability of failure. Techniques from perturbation method, reliability based robust design, the second moment method and Monte Carlo simulation method are employed directly to calculate the reliability as well as the reliability sensitivity. The conditions of probabilistic characteristics of original random variables are known as arbitrary distribution. The respective programs can be used to obtain the reliability and reliability sensitivity of all mechanical problems in this thesis accurately and quickly.
