An Efficient Multicast Scheme for Mobile Networks with Reduced Feedback

In recent years, the growth of live streaming and the need for video content to be transmitted to many users simultaneously have induced the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) to define a broadcast/multicast mode for LTE called evolved Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (eMBMS). One of the schemes of eMBMS, called Singe-Cell Point-to-Multipoint (SC-PTM), uses the most robust modulation and coding scheme (MCS), or the MCS of the UE with the worst channel quality, when transmitting to ensure that most of the user equipment (UE) that are within range can receive and decode packets transmitted from the evolved Node B (eNodeB) correctly. In this thesis, we propose two schemes to improve the throughput of SC-PTM while transmitting minimal UE feedback. The throughput is increased by using a higher MCS, while feedback is minimalized by choosing only a few UEs to transmit feedback. From our simulations, we concluded that our schemes can be used in various numbers of UEs and can achieve about 80% of the maximum possible throughput while transmitting minimal feedback.
