Bridging the Virtual and Real World: a Preliminary Study of Notifying Users in Virtual Reality of Messaging Notifications

摘要


虛擬實境的目的在於提供一個高沉浸與存在感的虛擬現實,而這樣的設計通常會讓使用者與真實世界脫離、無法收到來自外面的資訊,例如訊息、電話,而通知系統就是用來連接內外世界的橋梁,但怎麼設計一個良好的通知系統就是一個很大的問題,因為要考量系統要在什麼時候發送通知、要用什麼方式發送,而這些都需要再更深入的去探討和研究。因此我們做了一個使用者實驗,我們讓使用者在四種不同的VR活動 (等待系統載入、觀看360影片、玩尋寶遊戲和節奏遊戲) 下使用三種不同的通知的呈現方式 (HMD呈現、Controller呈現、Movable Panel呈現),我們主要針對於使用者收到通知時的感受和他們是否記得通知的內容來做分析。結果表明,使用者收到通知時的感受會因VR活動的不同而有顯著的差異,而且VR活動與通知的呈現方式之間存在交互作用。最後,我們列出了每種設計在不同的情況下可能會有的優點和缺點,並提供了我們針對於上述的優缺點進行分析後的設計建議,希望未來的研究和設計人員能透過我們的建議,設計出一個更加完善的VR智慧通知系統。

Virtual Reality (VR) provides users an immersive virtual environment that disconnects users from the real world. This environment often let users lost real-world information such as missing an emergent text or phone call. Notification systems are therefore introduced to bridge the gap between the virtual and real world. Notifications could take many forms, we have proposed three display designs, head-mounted design, controller display and movable panel. To understand users’ receptivity for different combinations of display designs and VR activities, we design an experiment to test out all designs in four settings, waiting in loading room, watching 360 videos, playing treasure hunt and a rhythm game. The result shows that users’ perception of notification differs across VR activities, and there is an interaction between VR activities and display designs. We also locate the advantages and disadvantages of each design and provide designers with the best practices for different VR activities.
