Halal products are a necessity and obligation for Muslims. Halal logistics processes are required to guarantee that Halal products are truly Halal at the point of consumption. Through the delivery processes, Halal products must have physical separation with Haram products. Currently, Indonesian logistics companies use the "Pure Dedicated Vehicles" policy to deal with Halal logistics requirements. They would use dedicated vehicles to deliver Halal-certified products only and employ the other trucks to transport the rest of the products. However, logistics providers may be forced to sacrifice vehicle utilization in case customers' demands are insufficient to keep some of the vehicles fully loaded. This study proposes two policies, namely, "Mixed Dedicated Vehicles" and "Shared vehicles" policies that not only improve the utilization rate of the vehicles but also satisfy the regulations of Halal logistics operations in the distribution processes. We formulate the mathematical model for the proposed policies. Also, we propose a Genetic Algorithm with a novel data structure as the solution approach. Our numerical results show that the proposed policies are better than the existing Pure Dedicated Vehicles policy. The proposed policies increase the vehicle utilization rate and satisfy the Halal logistics rule, which avoids the Halal products from contamination. The logistics companies in Indonesia may consider applying these policies as an alternative policy for cost-saving in Halal logistics operations.
