In this thesis, we study on the design and application of diffusers. First at all, we design a lens-array type diffuser for lighting application to perform high transmission efficiency and large diffusion angle. Then we propose a rotation measurement system with use of volume holography. In such a system, the ground glass, which is a random phase generator, is attached on a rod which is connected to a rotational stage. By adjusting the length of the rod, we can obtain various rotational selectivity of the volume holographic filter. In the simulation as well as the experiment, the rotational selectivity is from several degrees to one hundredth degrees. Finally, we apply a ground glass to be a random phase generator and rotational sensor. We store multiple images in volume holographic recording medium with random phase encoding to perform an all optical sensing. In the experiment, we store three images and successfully read out the rotation angle through the proposed system.
