Ever since its publications in 1816, Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s Christabel has received quite a lot of attention, such as its oft-debated disjointed narrative, superstitious association with witchery and vampire, and so forth. With a medieval color and glamour, it undeniably brings readers back in time to the Middle Ages and also leads them to essential religious significance by the power of prayer. In this lyric ballad, Coleridge not merely expresses a firm belief in thought-experiment that blends two polar opposites in one text, such as the uncanny and the marvelous, life and death, old and new, etc., but also enables his readers to enjoy the ultimate power of poeticization through a hybridized fantastic narrative. While attention is often accorded to Coleridge’s narrative failure and the psychological analyses on trauma, sexual desires and cultural obsession in the late eighteenth century, his metaphysical philosophy on polarity and nature does not receive satisfactory consideration in the recent decades. In this regard, what I am referring to in this study is thereby to explore Coleridge’s thoughts on life, nature, and religion in Christabel via his polarity, and also to purpose a Todorovian reading to unfold its poetic implications created by a fantastic narrative. Therefore, chapter one centers on a discussion of how Coleridge reconciles two poles of the traditional values and his individual talent for finding a union of new and old. Then, chapter two will draw attention to Coleridge’s thoughts on life in order to cast light on the Coleridgean philosophy of nature and language. And chapter three mainly tackles Coleridge’s poetic faith of the fantastic for broadening our knowledge of fantastic narrative in romantic writings. Through the use of above examples, it is hoped that an overview of the complex and varying perspectives in Christabel will be presented in this study.
