Lichao Jinshi Timing Bei, or the jinshi roll of honor for those who achieved firt-tier status in the Lê Dynasty imperial examination, is an important Vietnamese cultural heritage, and historically signifination for the information it provides ragarding the institution of the imperial examination, as well as the education system and persons attaining such honorary status during the Lê Dynasty. It is also significant for the study of the history of Vietnamese art. Lê Thánh Tông first published the roll of honor in 1484 CE as part of a educational policy initiative, emphasizing the need for talent in order to maintain a powerful state. Some of the metaphysical descriptions brought the notion of talent from the realm of the materialistic well-being of the nation into the ethical. This sentiment continused down to the Nguyễn Dynasty. This paper examines the inscriptions’s material culture and its metaphysical emphasis. Key: Lê Dynasty, Shenglong, Jinshi Timing Bei
