Rice is the major crops and staple food in Taiwan. It contributes to food safety, economy development of countryside, society stabilization, ecological conservation, and cultural inheritance. In recent years, the life style and social structure has been through a drastic change, introduce new products and service through highly value-added and innovated business model is a major issue of the proprietors. From previous researches, the studies of business model innovation of rice industries are rarely found, not to mention researching in rice husking industry. This study concentrates on three middle to large scale factories of Zhuoshui river Valley in Taiwan. Five fundamental elements of production (4M1E) commonly used in industrial management are used to evaluate their basic conditions. Four components of strategic entrepreneurship by Gary Hamel’s are used to construct the contents of in-depth interview. From the results, middle to large scale rice husking factories are on a large scale of human power, equipment, capitals and land. Financial resource is obvious the key factor for small scale rice husking factories to upgrade. From the aspect of core strategy in business model innovation: rice is food, introducing the food safety management system and certification is the necessary requirement. Transferring to small package market with elegant design and packing can drastically raise added-value of products. And awarded National Champion Rice is the basic strategy. From the aspect of strategy resources: introducing advanced rice husking machine to ensure husking quality is inevitable trend. Selecting excellent rice breed and implementing food traceability system is the way to guarantee the quality of raw material. From the aspect of customer interface: both virtual and physical channels are used to extract consumer’s habit and favor, it has no choice but to use scientific method to analyze consumer’s information. Finally, in the aspect of valued network: establishing the partnership with contracted farmer and providing consultancy is the key condition. Properly introduction and application of complementary products can increase the added-value of rice.
