Abstract Student ID: M10613012 Title of Thesis: Effects of Lactobacillus pentosus BD6 supplemented in diet on the growth, health status of white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei Total page: 81 pages Name of Institute: Department of Aquaculture, National Pingtung University of Science and Technology Graduate Date: 26 December, 2019 Degree Conferred: Master Name of Student: Tohap Simangunsong Advisor: Chun-Hung Liu, Ph. D The Contents of Abstract in This Thesis: This study evaluates the administration of Lactobacillus pentosus BD6 strain as a probiotic with different doses on growth, disease resistance, and immunity of white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. Lac. pentosus BD6 strains are effective in inhibiting the growth of all tested aquatic pathogens with the diameter of the inhibition zone appearing in the range of 1.7 ± 0.15 and 2.8 ± 0.12 cm. Shrimp (mean weight 2.56 ± 0.27 g) were fed for 60 days with diet control and treatment with probiotics of at 107, 108, 109, and 1010 CFU kg-1 and each group was carried out in triplicate. Diet with Lac. pentosus BD6 at doses 109 and 1010 CFU kg-1 significantly increases final weight, percentage weight gain, specific growth rate, and feed efficiency when compared to control. After a challenge test with Vibrio alginolyticus for four days, shrimp fed a diet at a dose of 1010 CFU kg-1 had a higher survival rate compared to other treatments and control. Supplementation with Lac. pentosus BD6 at a dose of 109 CFU kg-1 significantly increased lysozyme (LYS) activity on white shrimp. While shrimp supplemented with Lac. pentosus BD6 at a dose of 108 CFU kg-1 significantly increased phagocytic activity (PA) of L. vannamei. It was found that PA in shrimp given 108 CFU kg-1 increased twofold compared to control. However, there were no significant differences in superoxide dismutase (SOD), respiratory burst (RBs), total hemocyte count (THC), and phenoloxidase (PO) activity among control and all treatments. No significant differences in the expression level of LGBP, proPO I, proPO II, and PEN4 in hepatopancreas and hematocytes of shrimp were observed among all treatments and control. It was concluded that dietary supplementation of Lac. pentosus BD6 can be used in improving growth performance, disease resistance against V. alginolyticus infection, and immunity of L. vannamei through diet.
