Background: In Taiwan, depression is more prevalent in women than in men. About 10% to 15% of women experience postpartum depression during the first month after childbirth. Infant massage can stimulate flow in the veins and lymphatic vessels, regulate the sympathetic nervous system of the baby, and even alleviate the depression and stress symptoms of the mother, thereby offering an effective way to relieve depression and reduce emotional stress. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of infant massage on the depression and stress conditions of the mother. Method: We recruited 30 mothers with healthy infants between 0 and 18 months of age, excluding mothers or infants who were allergic to the massage oil. The remaining participants were divided into an experiment group and a control group, each containing 15 participants. The experiment group took a 60-minute infant massage class every week for four weeks, whereas the control group did not take any infant massage classes. Using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI II) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), we gauged the depression and stress conditions of the mothers before and after the infant massage classes to understand the influence of the infant massage classes on the depression and stress conditions of the mother. Result: The study results indicated a significant decrease in PSS scores in the experiment group after four weeks of infant massage classes. Their BDI II scores also declined, but the difference was not statistically significant. The pretest and posttest scores of the mothers in the control group displayed no significant differences. Conclusion: Infant massage can significantly improve the stress conditions of mothers.
