Taichung railway is planning to remove parts of railway embarkment due to railway viaduct for MRT. If the embarkment is removed, the area around the railway would become unused space and creates a fracture in cultural heritage. This study was designed to clarify the future direction of old urban areas by using urban observation method to understand urban activities and historic development of Taichung city. In recent years, the government has promoted reusing of old assets to resolve many issue faced by urban renewal. Cultural and creative industries are affecting the cultural heritage of old urban areas of Taichung city in a positive way. One can link these cultural heritages by walking through the old urban areas thanks to cultural and creative industries. Through the intervention of creative activities, one can keep the cultural heritage of old urban areas to continue to be seen. By reusing public space and introducing urban/artistic activities, public space can provide venues beyond that for resting and exercising. This would further define old urban areas and enrich local residents’ life, and would preserve the urban history with the artistic integration.
