Taiwan is located in circum-Pacific seismic belt, often under the threat of earthquake. Seismic prospecting results from the 921 earthquake, parts of the school buildings’ structural seismic resistant capacity are worthy of consideration. Most school buildings’ seismic resistant capacity are inadequate and do not meet current seismic design code. First several simple frame cases were used to analyze the ultimate load of structure, load-displacement curve, formation of plastic hinge, difference between the axial force, shear force and bending moment by different computer program. Then, the base shear capacity and seismic resistant capacity of school building were compared based on the actual size of each member, material properties and section of steel reinforcement. Simulations were carried out with different assumptions. The suggestion of retrofitted methods for the inadequate seismic resistant capacity is provided. The research result can serve as a reference for seismic retrofitting engineering in the future
