This study aims to discuss the interpersonal relationships of those who have been in children’s homes and the influences the homes have had on the different stages of their lives. This study adopted a narrative inquiry approach to collect and analyze data. The researcher initially used purposeful sampling to invite three participants who were willing to share their life stories and performed in-depth interviews with a semi-structured interview guide divided into three parts corresponding to their lives before, during, and after placement in the children’s home, focussing on the various intimate relationships they have had. The researcher then wrote down the stories of the participants’ intimate relationships based off of the recorded transcript, thus performing an analysis of the benefits and obstacles presented by children’s homes concerning intimate relationships and the structure of life meaning. The study has discovered the following conclusions through the narratives of the interpersonal relationships of these participants: 1.The influence of the participants’ relationships with members of their family of origin: a.The family of origin has an impact on the development of future intimate relationships. b.Familial pressure results in distancing and conflict between family members. c.The parentification phenomenon is common, causing particularly strong relationships among siblings. d.The participants are used to facing difficulties of life alone and are strongly independent. 2.The influence of children’s homes on the development of the participant’s intimate relationships: a.The placement process impacts the development of steady relationships. b.First impressions of children’s homes influence how they become accustomed to it. c.The caregiver’s beliefs on education and caregiving have an immense influence. d.Although the ways intimate relationships develop differ for different ages, they are all in pursuit of the same sense of attachment. 3.The influences of the participants’ future partner and family-in-law on their intimate relationships: a.Society’s negative perceptions of those who have been children’s homes reduce the possibility of the development of intimate relationships. b.The development of intimate relationships may differ for different genders and cultures. c.Building family and belongingness becomes the primary goal for all. Furthermore, based on the above conclusions, reflections and advice to keep in mind during the research process will be suggested, and the limitations of this process will also be detailed.
