科技大學學生使用電腦輔助發音教學軟體之成效評估

Effectiveness Evaluation of Students’ Learning Pronunciation With Computer Assisted Pronunciation Instruction in a Technological University

摘要


台灣的科技大學學生英文能力低落的問題,近年來引起關切。本研究以科技大學學生為對象,評估電腦輔助英語發音教學的效能。本研究的參與者為51名台灣中部某科技大學的大學部一年級學生。參與者接受為期8個星期的電腦輔助發音教學,每節教學課程先對參與者播放示範發音並顯示對應的音高升降曲線,然後參與者以電腦輔助發音訓練軟體練習發音。為評估教學效能,在教學課程前、中、後進行三次電腦口說測驗,以測量發音的改善程度。在教學課程結束時,進行問卷調查。對三次電腦口說測驗分數進行重複量數變異數分析的結果顯示,參與者的發音有顯著改善。問卷調查的分析結果顯示,參與者對於音韻特徵的覺察能力增加,且認為電腦輔助發音課程對其改善口語能力有幫助。本研究的結果可提供對科技大學學生以電腦輔助發音教學的經驗參考。

Recently the deficiency of English ability among students in vocational colleges and universities in Taiwan has raised major concerns. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of computer assisted pronunciation instruction in English pronunciation for these students. The participants were fifty-one first-year undergraduate students from a technological university located in central Taiwan. The participants received an eight-week pronunciation instruction, in which the participants were presented model utterances and corresponding pitch contours of target sentences and then practiced pronunciation of target sentences with computer assisted pronunciation training software. Computerized speaking tests were conducted before, during, and after the training to measure the improvement of pronunciation quality, and a questionnaire was administered at the end of the instruction. The results of repeated measures analysis of variance on the scores of the tests indicate that the pronunciation quality of the participants was significantly improved. Analysis on the questionnaire response shows that the participants’ awareness of phonological features was increased and the perception of the usefulness of the instruction was positive. The results of this study provide empirical evidence in teaching pronunciation to vocational college students with computer technology.
