Nowadays, the network is indispensable part of the daily life. Due to the large number of network users, finding an effective ways for network management to the physical network is one of the biggest challenges to network managers. The physical network layout and deployment is clearly ordered in the beginning and is adjusted moderately to meet the demands later on. However, the manager usually forgets to synchronize the changes to the network wiring diagrams. Consequently, it will cost a great deal of manpower and time in the future when an identification of the network device mapping information and port location is required. One option is to rely on some expensive network assisting detection equipments for the task. Regardless of the time and cost, both are a heavy burden to network management, staff. In this thesis, we utilize ARP Table, SNMP and other technologies to construct a system to monitor the network terminal devices. Through periodic detection and network equipment information collection, we can construct a relational map of the network structure. When some users counterfeit the MAC address, we can also use this system to track dawn the counterfeiter’s current location in order to eliminate the security holes. Moreover, we can also use this system to effectively dissolve the local network IP address conflict problem. Furthermore, by recording the on-time of terminal equipments, we can supply the device usage information to the one who take care the energy conservation policy. By using this information, the organization can define and enforce an effective energy saving policy.
